Brief History of Our School

Delhi Public School, Mathura Road established in 1949, functioned from a few tents pitched on the ground cleared from the onslaught of brambles. Today, spread over an area of about 15 acres of lush, green lawns, in the heart of the city, Delhi Public School is a co-educational day-cum-boarding school.

It was known as New Delhi Church High School before 1947. Renamed Naveen Bharat High School after Independence, the school was restructured as Delhi Public School Society in 1949. The DPS Society was founded in 1949 to enable Rev. J.D. Tytler to secure a new land for the school. The first DPS was opened on Mathura Road. The branch has produced luminaries such as Vinod Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Shriya Saran, Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Salman Khurshid among others.

The foundation stone of the school building was laid in 1956 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India. The impressive school building today comprises workshops, laboratories, computer centres, audio-visual lecture rooms, libraries, swimming pools, squash courts, clinic, a book shop and school canteen. The school functions under a registered society with eminent educationists, social workers and medical specialists. Ms. Vrinda Sarup is the Chairperson, Managing Committee, DPS Mathura Road; Shri B.K. Chaturvedi is the Chairman, The Delhi Public School Society and Member-Managing Committee, DPS Mathura Road; and Shri V.K. Shunglu is the Vice Chairman, The Delhi Public School Society and Vice Chairman Managing Committee, DPS Mathura Road. Their selfless work along with that of other members needs no testimony. Delhi Public School offers courses in Humanities, Commerce and Science. It prepares students for the All India Senior School Certificate Examination, conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Keeping in view the ideals of democracy and our ancient culture, Delhi Public School strives to provide a system of education most suited to the needs of our society today. Stress on diverse methods of teaching for different categories of students, opportunities for shouldering responsibilities in school life, constant participation in games and sports, and a wide range of cultural and co-curricular activities lend meaning to our school life. Thus, the end product is the harmonious, all round developed personality of our students. It is the aim of Delhi Public School to provide the best possible education to its students. Our primary aim is to develop in the student qualities of integrity, honesty, trust, tolerance and compassion, to promote a spirit of enquiry, to foster a scientific temper within the bonds of humanism, to help the student to become a meaningful part of his environment and to know that courage and industry have their due reward. Principal’s Message

"The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth." — John F. Kennedy

At Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, we view education not merely as a pedagogical exercise, but as a profound odyssey of self-discovery and intellectual awakening. Our hallowed halls are designed to be a sanctuary where raw potential is refined into excellence through a rigorous synthesis of academic inquiry and character development. As we stand at the threshold of the 2026-27 academic session, it is my distinct honour to extend a warm welcome to our students, both new and returning, to a year of transformative growth.

Our institutional philosophy remains firmly centered on our noble motto, "Service Before Self." This ethos is the guiding spirit of our community, leading our students to transcend individual ambition in favor of a larger, more compassionate societal contribution. In an era characterized by rapid technological flux and shifting global paradigms, we strive to cultivate global citizens who possess the cognitive flexibility to innovate and the moral fortitude to lead with integrity.

In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP), our curriculum has evolved into a dynamic framework that prioritizes experiential learning and multidisciplinary fluency. We are shifting the focus from ‘what to think’ to ‘how to think’, encouraging students to engage in critical discourse rather than traditional rote learning. This pedagogical shift ensures that our students are not just recipients of knowledge, but architects of innovation.

However, the true transformation that education seeks to achieve is made possible only through a strong and dynamic partnership between home and school. We sincerely invite the consistent and proactive involvement of parents, as their insights and collaboration serve as the essential framework upon which our students construct their aspirations and future success. The school almanac serves as more than a compendium of schedules, it is a roadmap for excellence and a testament to our shared aspirations.

As we embark on this academic session, I urge our students to embrace every challenge as a stepping stone for growth and success. Let us collectively seek to uphold the luminous legacy of this institution, ensuring that the flame of curiosity never wavers. Together, let us pledge to navigate the frontiers of knowledge, anchored by our values and propelled by our dreams.

Dr. Ram Singh

PTA Executive

PTA meetings give an opportunity to the parents and teachers to meet and discuss the progress of the children. The PTA has opened a Benevolent Fund to help and educate children who unfortunately lose their earning parent while they are still studying in the school.

This gesture has been greatly appreciated by young widows who would otherwise find it difficult to educate their children in DPS. Women, who unfortunately fall a victim to these circumstances, should apply every year to the Principal and Secretary, PTA for exemption of tuition fee for their children.
